News feeds are bustling with headlines about Trump’s tariffs taking effect. While this is a critical topic, other significant events are overshadowed.
Senate confirmation hearings for several Trump military and diplomatic nominees are taking place today.
Matthew Whitaker, Trump’s pick for U.S. ambassador to NATO, is one of them. And he has a very demanding plan for defense spending — meaning trade is not the only area where Canadians will feel pressure.
Can Canada afford the cost?
Whitaker’s defense spending target is 5% of GDP. This is nearly triple Canada’s current amount and is twice as much as the enduring target it has yet to meet (CNN).
If this is established, this will increase Canada’s defense spending by tens of billions.
Whitaker stated “NATO allies must meet their obligations. The United States will no longer subsidize nations that refuse to pay their fair share.”
Do you agree with Whitaker or is this demand unmerited?
