With the introduction of Travel Tuesday, the biggest shopping weekend of the year just got a facelift.
Black Friday takes the world, and all of the malls of the world, by storm every year. With the rise of e-commerce, Cyber Monday burst onto the scene in 2005.
But brawling over flat-screen TVs and Apple watches isn’t for everyone.
Snagging a dream vacation at a discount is where it’s at for many.
Therefore, Travel Tuesday is the newest addition to the family of shopping days over the American Thanksgiving long weekend.
A McKinsey & Company report found that search interest for “Travel Tuesday” rose more than 500% from 2021 to 2023.
The report, Travel Tuesday is real—and growing, illustrates that hotel, airline and cruise bookings jumped on Tuesday Nov. 28, 2023, among Americans.
Airline bookings shot over 60% that day. Cruises also reached more than 50% and Hotels 28% from the two-week period before and after Travel Tuesday.
American and Canadian consumers hold the highest search rates. However, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain also show rising interest.
Travel Tuesday is not as popular as its parent holidays, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But it offers opportunities and alternatives that a large part of the population are seeking.
WalletHub’s 2024 Winter Travel Survey showed that 58% of American participants prefer to spend money on travel over retail shopping.
“European travel companies can anticipate the possibility that Travel Tuesday will become a growing phenomenon in their region,” McKinsey’s report states.
